High Frequency Words
Our Word
Wall Words are high-frequency/sight words. Although it's possible to "sound
out" some of them, I recommend learning to recognize the whole word. In the
classroom, about 4-5 words are added to the word wall each week. We use the
words in several activities and have them available for reference during
writing.
Try some of these activities at
home to help your child learn these words.
Each day,
practice 4 - 5 words. Use 3 that are known fairly well and 2 others. Make a
duplicate set of cards (same word on 2 cards) and play a Concentration type
game. Your child has to read the words to keep a matched pair and he can keep
your matched pair by reading those words!
Keep a set
of word cards in the car for a back-seat game. If your child doesn't recognize a
word, give hints by using the word in a sentence.
Look for
the words in stories you are reading to your child. (You are doing that every
day, right?)
Attach a
paper clip to each card. Use a magnetic fishing pole (found at many dollar
stores) to “catch” the words. You can only keep the ones you know!
Play Tic-Tac-Toe
by arranging 9 cards in 3 rows of 3. Play the same as Tic-Tac-Toe except you
have to read the word before you place an x or an o on it.
Make
sentences out of the words. (Put magnets on the back of the cards and play on
the refrigerator.
Use word cards and add Buzz Cards. Shuffle
cards. Place cards face down. Draw and read cards. If a Buzz
Card is drawn, buzz around like a bee until the next card is read.
Use a
favorite game board but add an extra step. Before moving your marker you must
read a word. Here are some
gameboards to print and use.
Let me
know if you find other games to play that help learn the words
by sight!

Town's motivating Pupil Editions include the perfect mix of nonfiction and
narrative selections. In each lesson students develop robust vocabularies based on carefully selected words for instruction.
Student-friendly explanations and meaningful learning activities get students
involved in thinking about, using, and noticing new words in school and all
around town.
It is
important to keep these words in circulation. Use these words in
conversation with your child and listen for them when your child is speaking.
